ACT Jazz Foundations

The ACT IMP Jazz Foundations is a new ensemble in 2026, offering an extension opportunity for interested, hard-working and skilled saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano/keyboard, electric guitar, bass guitar, drumkit and vibraphone players in Years 7 and 8 in ACT public schools. Students are selected by audition. Membership in the ACT IMP Jazz Foundations is for one year only. All places are declared vacant at the end of each academic year, and eligible students may choose to re-audition for a place in the group for the following year.
This ensemble performs standard and contemporary jazz repertoire that has been specially selected to assist students in the development of jazz-specific instrumental technique and performance skills. Music reading skills are required of all participants.
It is strongly encouraged that members of the ACT IMP Jazz Foundations are also active and positive participants in their school bands, where the opportunities exist.
Private instrumental lessons for participants are strongly encouraged but not required. Please note the IMP does not provide private instrumental tuition.
There is an annual membership fee associated with participation in this ensemble, and this fee is subject to change each year. Please note that this fee is a contribution only and does not cover the full costs associated with a student’s participation in the group. Students are required to wear a white collared business shirt and black pants, socks and shoes for all performances. There may also be additional costs associated with participation in excursions and other events.
In 2026, ACT IMP Jazz Foundations rehearsals will be held each Tuesday 4:45-5:45pm during school terms, at the IMP premises in Kaleen.
In 2026, the conductor of the ACT Jazz Foundations ensemble is Taliya Blom.
